I’m so excited to introduce you to Sophie, super mum and owner of the awesome kids clothing company, Small to TALL. I was lucky enough to steal some of Sophie’s time and ask her some questions about life and her wonderful business.
Tell us about your family.
My husband, Kris, and I and 2 gorgeous boys: Jack who is 6 and Cameron who is 4. I’m outnumbered as the only girl!
How did Small to TALL begin and was it what you always wanted to do?
I have a nephew in the UK who is a little bit older than my eldest son, Jack, so I was lucky enough to receive lots of fantastic hand-me-downs from him. I struggled to find similar items at a similar price in Sydney, especially for boys, and knew that other mum friends felt the same. After many a playdate moaning with Sarah, a friend from my mother’s group, we as good as dared each other into setting up shop and our fifth baby was born. Sarah and I worked together to set up Small to TALL as a partnership for the first couple of years. When she decided to leave the business at the start of 2014, I decided to go it alone.
It wasn’t something that I had set out to do as my ‘grand plan’ but I work in the world of designing and developing websites, particularly e-commerce sites so it seemed like a good opportunity to put my skills into practice and grow a business of my own for a change!
What are your favourite pieces/items?
That is a really hard question to answer as I love all the items we sell which are hand-picked by me (with input from Jack and Cam, my ‘consumer panel’.) I really love our First Baby Shoe kits which are basically a kit which includes everything you need to make a pair of first shoes for a baby yourself. I am a wannabee creative who is hopeless at making stuff and these satisfy a deep-seated longing to be able to make something that is a bit different!
Another big fave label of mine is redurchin, a London label created by a Mum who wanted to create clothes that were graphically-inspired and what her kids wanted to wear. This label is set to explode next year with some fantastic new designs. I can’t wait to share it.
What’s one children’s fashion item you wish would go away?
Dare I say it.. those baby headbands with the huge baubles on them. Do you know what I mean? I just don’t see the point.
How do you balance work and life and motherhood?
With difficulty. I not only have the kids and Small to TALL to balance, but I am also still working the day job as a part-time consultant for the consumer association CHOICE. Jack started school last year and Cam spends 4 days a week in Family Day Care but there is still a lot to juggle – the same with most parents these days.
I am not afraid to admit that I am struggling to keep on top of it all at the moment and I have reached a point where I really need to simplify. My goal for next year is to focus on the kids and Small to TALL. Watch this space!
What do you love to do in your “down time”?
Haha! Sorry, had to have a giggle there. Ok, down time.. let me try to remember. That is a pretty easy one for me, I love to read and try to read as much as I possibly can.
What are your favourite websites and/or blogs?
There are so many out there that I visit for different reasons but for inspiration these are my go-tos:
- Raising Misters [raisingmisters.com] (of course!)
- Multiples of Two [multiplesoftwo.com] which is a lovely site created by a good friend which looks at business, family and you aimed at the person who is juggling all 3.
- The inspirational Bondville [http://blog.stephbond.com/] run by the ever so lovely Steph Bond which is about all things kids and design in Australia
What is your biggest struggle as a mum?
Honestly, it’s about not spreading myself too thinly and being able to say ‘no’ to things without feeling guilty so that I can give the boys enough of me.
What is your proudest moment and/or achievement?
Having my kids. I was so unprepared for the amazing-ness of becoming a mum. The hardest and best thing all wrapped into one.
What’s next for Small to TALL?
The next big step for Small to TALL is for me to commit to it fully and grow it from the little micro biz it is into the profitable small biz I want it to be. I am hoping to produce a ‘Small to TALL’ range at some stage but that is a little way off yet.
My two cents
Sophie was kind enough to gift us with these two beautiful t-shirts. Jack (my eldest) wears the Sharky Tee by redurchin – currently on sale for $21.00. Hayden wears the Out To Play tee by Boys&Girls, also on sale for $20.80.
Even though I’m on a budget, I look for quality. Like most misters, mine are constantly on the go. They need clothes that allow them to run and jump and play, clothes that last, clothes than can breath and most importantly, clothes that look great. I can honestly say that these tee’s fit into each category. The quality is fantastic, they’re unique and I love the colours. The boys are super happy with them too!
Be sure to check out the Small to TALL website for the full range. There’s also a massive SALE on right now until the end of the month – grab yourself a bargain!
